Power Electronics Engineer

We seek to add a hands on power electronics engineer to our dynamic team in support of a multi-year government contract. The selected applicant will provide input as an electrical engineering expert to projects led by our Technical Director.

Essential Duties:

  • New technology development and product design
  • Design, simulation, and validation of power conversion circuits
  • Building and testing prototypes
  • Design and maintenance of test stands, development of test procedures and testing
  • Direction of and participation in the production and installation of power conversion systems
  • Analysis of power systems reliability and development of maintenance procedures based on MTBF for power electronics and associated hardware
  • Document power conversion circuits, products and equipment
  • Technical product support and failure analysis
  • Contribution to company intellectual property through invention disclosures
  • Occasional foreign and domestic travel to attend reviews, visit vendors and attend conferences and workshops

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSEE and a minimum of 7 years of experience in high-voltage power electronics, power supply or pulsed power R&D and design.
  • Demonstrated strong technical understanding and experience in power conversion engineering and creative solutions to a range of issues.
  • Demonstrated strong technical understanding and knowledge base of high voltage, high current and high-frequency switching
  • Analog, logic and mixed-signal circuit design, analysis and simulation using LTSpice, Micro-Cap or similar.
  • Circuit design using power electronics devices including BJTs, MOSFETS, and IGBTs.
  • Hands-on skills in prototype development.
  • Integration of equipment into highly complex systems.
  • Single phase and poly-phase AC circuits and power distribution.
  • Knowledge of communication and control theory and microcontrollers/FPGA’s.
  • Knowledge of national and international electrical codes and electrical safety such as NEC, LOTO and NFPA 70E.
  • Good written and oral communications skill and use of standard Office products, i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Demonstrated ability to make technical decisions, solve difficult problems, and interact effectively within a diverse team.
  • Ability with CAD tools for schematic capture and mechanical design such as Fusion 360, AutoCAD or other 2D and solid modeling tools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • MSEE (preferred) and a minimum of 5 years of experience with an emphasis on power electronics, power supplies or pulsed power R&D or design.
  • Electromagnetics design of inductors, high-frequency transformers, and high voltage/current/frequency structures.
  • Electromagnetics analysis using FEA codes such as MAXWELL, OPERA or similar.
  • Thermal analysis and design, and the use of FEA codes.
  • Systems control using, FPGAs, PLCs, PXI or similar.
  • PCB layout and design.
  • Programming skills such as MATLAB, FPGA languages, C/C++, visual basic or other.

Senior Research Technician

We seek a well-qualified Senior Research Technician with significant hands-on expertise and the ability to work independently to provide experimental and test support to M. S. and Ph. D. level personnel. Although we seek an individual highly qualified in an area of expertise, breadth is also important in at least two to three of the following areas: High-voltage, pulsed power, high vacuum systems, vacuum coating, optics, lasers, mechanical systems and microscopic optics/electronic module assembly.

Essential Duties:

  • Desire and motivation to expand technical skills, knowledge and abilities; self-motivated and willing to work independently.
  • Work with professional staff, perform mechanical and/or electrical design, work with vendors and local shops to fabricate experimental hardware and assemble the designed system.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of moderately complex high voltage equipment, mechanical optical and/or vacuum systems.
  • Work independently, from sketches, mechanical drawings, electronic schematics, verbal or written instructions and solve moderately complex problems to the sub-system or component level.
  • Work with professional staff to provide general technical support for installations, modifications, testing, analysis, troubleshooting, maintenance and commissioning of high voltage equipment, mechanical, optical and/or vacuum systems independently, under general supervision.
  • Acquire and analyze basic data and test results using known performance parameters to report results and identify problems.
  • Interface with vendors to identify and resolve moderately complex technical issues.
  • Work safely with high voltage, multi kilowatt power equipment and/or high-powered lasers, assist in writing and enforcing safety protocols.
  • Participate in recruiting and hiring of new staff.
  • Assist in writing of reports to sponsors and investors.
  • Ability to work under Export Control and company proprietary instructions.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience and an Associate's Degree in an engineering technology such as electronics or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Experience working in a large-scale manufacturing or scientific research environment including working with vendors.
  • Detailed skills, knowledge, and abilities working with well understood moderately complex electronic circuits and systems, independently, under general supervision.
  • Experience in safe work and business practices.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology
  • Continuing education credits in one or more of the following areas: High-voltage, pulsed power, high vacuum systems, vacuum coating, optics and/or lasers.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Recent laser safety eye exam.
